Mother of boy left at Taste found

The mother of a 6-year-old boy abandoned at the Taste of Chicago turned herself in to authorities Saturday morning, police said.
The woman turned herself in to Harrison Area detectives around 11 a.m. Saturday, according to police News Affairs Officer Marcel Bright.
No information was immediately available regarding her identity or why she left the boy, Bright said.
The investigation was continuing to determine if charges would be sought, he said.
The 6-year-old boy remains in protective custody and the mother was being questioned at Harrison Area detective headquarters, 3151 W. Harrison St.
The boy's mother had contact with authorities in 2003, and records indicate she was overwhelmed and needed help raising the boy, who has spent some time in foster care, according to state child-welfare reports.
The reports say the child was put into foster care in April 2003 after the mother allegedly called authorities to report she had locked herself in a room so she wouldn't hurt him. He was returned to his mother in September 2004 after she had received counseling and classes, the reports say.
Then in September 2005, she allegedly left the child alone, which led to a report to Chicago Police for endangering the life of a child.
Kendall Marlowe, a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, confirmed that the agency had previous contact with the boy's family, including substantiated allegations of neglect, and that DCFS was still providing supportive services to the family.
The child was taken into DCFS custody July 1, a day after he was found at the Taste, Marlowe said.
He is one of 72 children who have gotten lost at the Taste so far this year. All but him were reunited with family, police said.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Jul 5, 2006 (AP)— Internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, whose repertoire ranged from Baroque to the contemporary, has died.
She died Monday morning at her Santa Fe home with her husband, composer Peter Lieberson, at her side, said Richard Gaddes, general director of the Santa Fe Opera. She was 52.
The singer had battled breast cancer in recent years and canceled performances in 2005 and 2006 because of back problems. Her death shocked the music world because she often kept details about her health private, Gaddes said.
Nonetheless, he said she was in a class of her own.
"Her voice was so extraordinarily beautiful," he said. "She was just an amazing musician and very serious about her work. She was towering, really."
The trade newspaper Musical America named her vocalist of the year in 2001.
A native of the San Francisco Bay area, Hunt Lieberson began her musical career as a violist and later became a recitalist, concert singer and operatic performer, according to her biography on the IMG Artists Web site.
She met her husband at the Santa Fe Opera during the 1997 production of Peter Lieberson's "Ashoka's Dream," in which she played Triraksha.
Laurent Naouri, a leading French baritone, said Tuesday from Santa Fe that the French likely will remember Hunt Lieberson for her representation of Phaedra in Rameau's "Hippolyte et Aricie."
"That was her big time, her big day," Naouri said of Hunt Lieberson's 1997 Baroque performance.
"When she sang her character, people would forget all that is conventional in opera," Naouri said. "People would forget even her singing; they would just feel something so deep and true, and I think that's what opera ideally is meant to be. But I think it's very difficult to meet that level of commitment."
On the opera stage, Hunt Lieberson had excelled in roles as diverse as Ottavia (Monteverdi), Ariodante (Handel), Sesto (Mozart), Carmen (Bizet), Myrtle Wilson (Harbison) and Didon (Berlioz), according to IMG Artists, which represented her.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Erin Buescher is making the most of her extended playing time this season. Buescher scored 19 points on 8-for-10 shooting, and Nicole Powell added 16 points as the defending WNBA champion Sacramento Monarchs routed the struggling New York Liberty 79-58 Thursday night.
''You better not miss your open layups when your teammates pass to you,'' Buescher said. ''I had a lot of good shots and I was fortunate to hit a bunch of them.''
Buescher has benefited from the extra time available with DeMya Walker sidelined after giving birth to a daughter on April 11.
''Erin Buescher has been playing well all year, people are just starting to notice,'' Monarchs coach John Whisenant said. ''DeMya Walker's pregnancy, and she's just been back a couple of weeks we can't play her more than 2-3 minutes at a time, she's not in good enough condition. What that did is give Erin the minutes and the opportunity.
''It's really pushed Erin up there where she's had to play a lot of minutes and she's been playing well.''
Walker, in her seventh game since returning, had a season-high 14 points. Yolanda Griffith added 12 points and nine rebounds for Sacramento (10-8), which won for the third time in four games.
''We showed how we are capable of playing,'' Griffith said. ''When we are all focused, know our assignments and roles, we can beat anybody. We played defense the right way.''

Shameka Christon and Sherill Baker scored 11 points apiece to lead the Liberty (4-12), losers of three straight. Becky Hammon, an All-Star starter for the East, finished with a season-low five points on 2-for-12 shooting. She also had six rebounds to top 500 in her career.
After the game, Hammon gathered the team on the court and expressed her dissatisfaction with the poor play.
''We have to figure out some answers, we have to come out and play hard,'' Hammon said. ''The energy has to start coming from us. Hopefully everyone will take to heart what was discussed at halfcourt and the locker room and have a better game'' (Friday at Chicago).
The Monarchs broke the game open with a 16-2 run, that spanned both halves, and took a 51-35 lead on Griffith's basket with 6:24 left in the third quarter.
After Baker made four free throws in 9 seconds to pull New York to within 12 nearly a minute later, Sacramento scored 10 consecutive points to put the game out of reach.
The Liberty shot 42 percent in the first half, but just 31 percent (9-for-29) after the break and fell to 2-6 at home.
''I tried to convey what it means to play for New York,'' Hammon said. ''I explained the tradition that New York has. The Liberty reputation is to play hard for 40 minutes. We have to protect that tradition. We are young but we have to figure this out.''
New York coach Pat Coyle didn't speak to reporters after the game but released comments through the team's media relations department.
''Becky hit the mark, Becky hit the game on the head, what she had to say was the truth,'' Coyle said in a statement. ''I have made the decision the people that play hard are going to play. It's about being a professional athlete and know that this is your job.''

THREE people have been arrested and charged with stealing confidential information on drink recipes from Coca-Cola and trying to sell it to rival Pepsi.
The suspects include an executive administrative assistant at Atlanta-based Coke, Joya Williams, who is accused of stealing corporate files and a sample of a new Coca-Cola product.
Williams, 41, Ibrahim Dimson, 39, and Edmund Duhaney, 43, are charged with wire fraud and unlawfully stealing and selling Coke trade secrets. They are expected to appear before a federal judge in Atlanta today.
Prosecutors say that on May 19, New York-based Pepsi provided Coke with a copy of a letter mailed to Pepsi in an official Coca-Cola business envelope.
The letter, postmarked from the Bronx in New York, was from an individual identifying himself as "Dirk," who claimed to be employed at a high level with Coca-Cola and offered "very detailed and confidential information". "Dirk" was later identified as Dimson, the FBI said.
Coca-Cola immediately contacted the FBI and an undercover investigation began.
Prosecutors say Williams was the source of the information Dimson offered to Pepsi. They say "Dirk" gave an FBI undercover agent Coca-Cola documents marked classified and confidential. "Dirk" wanted $US10,000 ($A13,500) for them.
"Dirk" later produced other secret documents, and also wanted $US75,000 for a highly confidential product sample of a new Coca-Cola project.
On June 27, an undercover FBI agent offered to buy other trade secret items for $US1.5 million from "Dirk". Dimson, Williams and Duhaney were arrested in Atlanta on Wednesday, the day the $US1.5 million deal was to take place.

sunday and monday
i hooked up with my parents and went to the casino in Lincoln RI on sunday. I played in the casino all day on a 20.00 bill ( moms money) i was doing fairly well til i ran into her and her bad luck. We were there from 11=5 and went to dinner. I went shopping afterwards to get tent pegs, a poncho and other incidentals at the big boxed. at 930, i went outside and saw the fireworks from in front of the house. you can walk down the road and get a full view of the Milford Fireworks.
monday, my sister has a bbQ with corn, chicken, hamburgers, steak, hotdogs, salads, potato and macaroni and green and boca burgers for her vegetarian sister. THe girls got their books and gifts i brought them and we played cards. then it was pool time. My sister went swimming so i do. My neices loved playing catch with me in the floating chair and other pool games. i spent most of the day in the pool. i ate alot of green stuff and corn and then took the rest home. if i knew my brother was going to boston i would have stayed and gone to the fireworks with him but i didnt know or he didnt have room so i packed to go home- remembering my falcon ridge tent and sleeping back and air mattress and tarps

saturday- new bedford
i got the new bedford summerfest early and went to the mainstage. Before i did, i went to get a free ticket for the Phil Ochs song circle..but i didnt think that i wanted to go.. i wanted to see another workshop instead.
the first act of the day, was Gandolf Murphy, SLoan wainwright and the Kennedys.. there were lots of covers and some original songs..
the next thing i wanted to see was Lori McKenna on the main stage so i wandered around and Ran into my childhood neighbor, who is not music fan but has friends in new bedford and comes to the festivals there three times a years. so instead of seeing cliff eberhardt. i talked to mike my neighbor. I went for a soda and sat down to hear this Belfast band complete with fiddles, banjo and bagpipes and whistles. i then saw LOri who is just back from nashville. She has new waxed eyebrows and highlights in her hair. she told some sweet stories about her husband meeeting Tim McGraw and Faith HIll in boston and how her record is finished and she is waiting for word from warner brothers in nashville. she sang some new songs. it was a good set.
i then tried to see the Kennedys but the new stages are so small and hte number of poeple have grown that this festival is getting too crowded because the stage areas are too small. YOu had to go to the workshop before the one you wanted to make sure you got in.
i went to see Eliza Gilkyson with that same belfast band and a cape breton fiddler.. that was a trainwreck for her. she didnt fit in-
i stayed there for Al Tibbets, Jeff Davis, Ronny Cox and John Gorka doing sad songs of people and places. I asked JOhn to do Flying Red HOrse and he obliged me.
I saw something that i had never seen at a workshop. Jeff Davis explained he was playing a Frank Profitt Banjo...Three more exist in the world. he is a songcollector type guy and a purist.. he played a traditional tune and stopped and asked Ronny Cox's bass player TO STOP PLAYING ALONG. he said he was gonna do something rude and did just that..
i stayed for the Phil Ochs song circle because i had a ticket and seat and didnt have to move.
Bob Franke, Kim and REggie Harris, John Gorka, Anne HIlls, Sloan Wainwright, John Crookson, Pat Wictor all doing Phil ochs songs...
i didnt go back to new bedford on sunday due to threat of rain that didnt happen.

friday - arrival and helping mom and dad
i left for massachusetts for the long 4th of july weekend and arrived early afternoon. my mom was out to lunch and my dad was home. We did some errands together and my mom came home. They were waiting for a new washer and dryer to be delivered. It was delivered by two young guys (under 25) after 6pm. my mom thought they would do a rush job on friday, so my dad and i supervised them. I cleaned behind the appliances that were moved and ensured that there were no nicks or scratches on the washer and dryer. afterwards, it was late by my parents standards so we went to a local restaurant to eat. I used to refuse to eat there because i could not get hte meals fixed the way i wanted. due to time, i relented and i ordered the meal as i wanted and i was totally satisfied and glad that i tried this restaurant again.
before the long 4th of july weekend
i got a call from the Director of the ACS Training Academy to talk to me about my application. Though she was pleased that i applied, she explained that she was restrained by civil service restrictions and offered me a salary that was lower than the top of the range. After some futile negotiation of cash and other perks, the choice was to pursue my application or withdraw it. I asked her to submit my application. She explained the process could be 3-6 months depending on how expeditiously Office of Management and Budget processes my application.
that information shines a light on the next few months... it also means that my decision to teach on saturday would not interfere with the position i am accepting. I believe that she has earmarked me for Queens. She aslo reminded me that once i am in the City employment, i can move around and search other employment. After 1-2 of training and learning the system, my background is appropriate to apply for supervisor.
i explained that i consider this starting at a different end of my career so i asked her to submit my application.
it will be nice to work, to work and not be responsible for anyone but me.... for a while..
i am thinking of other ways to make money and work on the side.... i can leave Queens at 5 and make it to a 6pm class or teach an 8pm to 10 class...

The flying red horse from the gasoline wars
Took off from her station in the sun
Turning her back on the pack at the pump
She jumped down from the sign to run
